Viserai, Between Worlds

Whenever you create 1 or more Runechants, banish the top card of your deck. Then if you've created 3 or more Runechants this turn, traverse.

Rulings

From the Usurp the Shadow Throne release notes
  • Viserai is a double-faced hero. The front-side of your hero is marked with a {^} icon at the bottom of its card, below its type box. You will present this side as your hero during start-of-game procedure.
  • Viserai has a static-triggered ability that will trigger in every phase of the game, regardless of turn. This will trigger once per Runechant creation multi-event. For example, if you are instructed to “Create 2 Runechants”, this ability will trigger once. If you are instructed to “create a Runechant token. Create a Runechant token”, this ability will trigger twice.
  • An effect must result in the creation of a Runechant in order to trigger Viserai’s ability. If a Runechant creation event is replaced so that no Runechant tokens are created (for example, by Ripple Away) then Viserai’s ability will not trigger.
  • When Viserai’s triggered ability resolves, it will banish the top card of your deck. Then, you will traverse (flip your hero) if you have created 3 or more Runechants this turn. The traversal effect is mandatory, if you have met the condition (created 3 or more Runechants) and not conditioned on being able to banish a card from the top of your deck.
  • Viserai’s ability will not trigger from playing a card that “Counts as a Runechant” (for example, Runechant of Envy). It will only trigger when you create 1 or more Runechants.
  • If Viserai were to generate 2 or more triggers that would result in traversing, only the first traverse will succeed. An instruction to traverse that was generated from a given side of Viserai will fail if that side is no longer face-up. For example, if Viserai, the Forsaken had two triggered layers with traverse, the first would succeed, transforming Viserai into their back-face (Viserai, Usurper) and the second traverse would fail because you cannot traverse from Viserai, Usurper to Viserai, Usurper.

Keyword notes

Traverse - Flip this.
  • Traverse is a static discrete effect.
  • In Usurp the Shadow Throne, the hero’s ability will indicate under what conditions it will flip to its other side. When a hero is instructed to traverse, you will flip the hero to its other side.
  • If multiple traverse effects are generated from the same ability on one of the sides of the hero, this will not result in your hero flipping back and forth between its front and back sides. Instead, the first traverse effect to resolve will result in you flipping to the other side, then the other traverse effects that were generated from the same ability will simply fail (other effects on those layers will resolve such as banishing the top card of your deck).
  • When you traverse, effects that apply to the traversing card persist (e.g. the Marked condition), and your life total remains the same.
  • If a hero without a back-side would generate a traverse event (for example Shiyana, becoming Viserai, Between Worlds) then the traverse event would fail, since there is no valid back-side to flip to.
