From the Usurp the Shadow Throne release notes

To activate Appalling Bearers’ activated ability, you must discard a card with the Zombie subtype from your hand, and destroy this card. If you cannot do both, you cannot activate this ability.
When Appalling Bearers’ activated ability resolves, it will generate a shielding-prevention effect that will prevent the next 2 damage to you this turn. If unpreventable damage would be dealt to you while this is active, it will not consume the remaining shielding-prevention.
